Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project
1. Aims and Objectives
The project sets to connect participants from different countries to explore real issues related to climate change and discuss real-world climate actions. In this project, we expect participants to reflect on the issues, identify challenges and discuss solutions. The specific aims and learning outcomes are outlined below.
Aims
-
Increase climate change awareness: to increase participants' awareness and understanding of climate change issues, and mitigation or adaptation practices across different cultural and geographical contexts.
-
Foster global engagement: cultivate an environment where participants from various countries can engage with each other and develop a global perspective on climate change issues.
-
Promote intercultural exchange: the project will aim to foster collaboration and interaction, encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experiences related to climate change action, and enabling participants to learn from diverse cultural viewpoints.
Learning outcomes
-
Cross-cultural competence: participants will develop the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, improving their global awareness and intercultural communication skills.
-
Understanding of environmental practices: participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of different environmental sustainability practices used around the world. They will be able to compare these practices and understand their impacts at local and global levels.
-
Ethical reasoning and action: participants will explore the ethical dimensions of environmental decisions and sustainability practices, fostering a sense of global citizenship and responsibility towards future generations.
-
Critical thinking and problem-solving: participants will develop the ability to discuss and critically evaluate various environmental sustainability practices from around the world. They will improve their critical thinking skills to analyze complex environmental issues, understanding the underlying factors and implications rather than focusing on proposing immediate solutions.
-
Collaborative and participatory skills: through online discussions and collaboration, participants will enhance their ability to engage effectively in teams, gaining skills in negotiation, communication, and collaborative problem-solving.
-
Digital literacy: participants will improve their digital communication and online collaboration skills.
3.Participating institutions
The project is coordinated by Jaliyyah Bello (College of Business and Law, Coventry University, UK) and Prof Isabel Rodriguez-Tejedo (School of Economics and Business, University of Navarra, Spain). Key technical and organisational infrastructure and support is provided by Sara Da Costa, Coventry University).
This project is made possible by the collaboration of academic and experts from partner institutions:
This partnership enhances the global visibility of the universities, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among academics and students from diverse institutions across continents. Aligned with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, this initiative embodies the spirit of the SDGs by promoting inclusive and global cooperation. By working together, we strengthen our collective ability to address the global challenge of climate change and contribute to sustainable development.

4.Description of activities
This COIL project has two main components:
1. COIL platform, Open Aula, provided by Coventry University.
-
After registration, participants will have access to a platform. In it, participants will be able to access
-
general information (such as a privacy notice and guidelines for behavior on social media),
-
information about virtual mobility and COIL,
-
content on cultural differences, communication and resources and information geared towards building inter-cultural skills, and
-
information about the countries/regions/cities of partner institutions as well as their culture and history
The platform offers opportunities for asynchronous interaction of participants, via forums and information sharing.
2. Live Sessions
-
Participants will attend live interactive sessions via video conferencing, where they will learn about local challenges related to climate change and explore the innovative solutions currently being implemented to address these issues.
-
Each session will also include activities designed to foster a deeper understanding of global climate action initiatives, in line with SDG 13, Climate Action.
-
Through these sessions, participants will gain insights into both the local and global efforts to combat climate change, enhancing their capacity to contribute to sustainable solutions worldwide
The tentative calendar for the 2025/2026 academic year includes sessions scheduled for the weeks of October 13, October 27, November 10, November 24, and December 8.
Participants will receive a certificate of participation, acknowledging their involvement in this global initiative.
